Richard James Teachout, 86, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in Wheeling Hospital

Richard was born February 25, 1931, in Wheeling, a son of the late Alfred J. and Mildred A. (Yaeger) Teachout.

In his younger years, Richard worked at Teachout Jewelry Store, in Center Market, Wheeling.  He was a proud marine.  He attended basic training at Parris Island, S.C., was later stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., served in the Korean War, and played percussion in the Marine Corp. Band.  Following his time in the service; he worked at Nate Harrison’s Jewelry Store, Wheeling. He then worked as a foreman at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Beech Bottom Plant.  Following his retirement from Wheeling-Pitt, he was employed at the Moundsville Prison as the Superintendent of Prison Industries, where he worked for 6 years.  He was a high school graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic; and a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and the CAVE Club, Wheeling.  He enjoyed watching local high school football on Wheeling Island; and was an avid West Virginia University sports fan, especially football & basketball.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death his wife, Mary Maxine (Savage) Teachout, in 1993; and a brother, Bernard A. Teachout, in 2015.  He is survived by his six children, Richard M. (Elaine) Teachout of Wheeling, Bruce A. (Ellie) Teachout of Wheeling, David J. (Ginny) Teachout of Greensboro, N.C., Daniel J. (Jennifer) Teachout of Akron, Ohio, Thomas K. (Cherrie) Teachout of Cary, N.C., and Karen S. (Ken) Taylor of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Joan Schmalstieg of Weirton, W.Va. and Marilyn (Bill) Behrens of Mingo Junction, Ohio.; 18 grandchildren, Valerie, Colleen, Emily, Brea, Angela, Kayla, Chris, Melissa, Sophie, Ben, Ella, Justine, Cory, Mary Katelyn, Sara Beth, Ashley, Elizabeth and Jacob; and 9 great-grandchildren, Audrey, Paige, Evelyn, Madelyn, William, Julia, Brynlee, Axl and Kinsley.

Friends will be received from 1-3 and 5-7 pm, Sunday, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 6:30 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Monday, April 24, 2017, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with Rev. William K. Matheny, Jr. as celebrant.  Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veteran’s Honor Guard.

Our condolences to all of Mr. Teachout’s Family. While I only saw him time to time over the years, one could quickly tell what a special kind of man he was. I always enjoyed talking with him, he was so upbeat & so proud of all of his family.
