Bernard "Bernie" Glenn

Bernard, “Bernie”, Glenn, 82, of Wheeling. WV passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 6, 2020.

He was born on April 15, 1937 in Wheeling, WV. The son of the late Betty (Parker) Glenn and Bernard C. Glenn. Bernie attended Blessed Trinity Grade School, Wheeling Central Catholic High School, and was in the first graduating class of Wheeling College in 1959, with a bachelor’s degree in business.

From 1957 to 1995 he helped open and worked along with his parents, Betty and Bernie, “Wheeling’s Most Unusual Store”, Bernie Glenns in the Fulton area of Wheeling, and later at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

While attending high school, Bernie formed an orchestra, known as Bernie Glenn & The Esquires, playing each weekend at many dances, parties and reunions throughout the Ohio Valley until the 1990’s. His desire to stay active and his love of people led him to continue working as a manager at Eckerd Drug Store in Pittsburgh, a jeweler at JC Penny’s and finally 12 years as a licensed insurance agent working with his son until he became ill in June, 2019. Bernie was a member St. Vincent De Paul Parish and served on parish council, was past president & council member of the Wheeling College Alumni Association, and secretary of the local Musicians Union in Wheeling.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the love of his life, Byford, “Bea”, (Johnston) Glenn. He was a loving father to 3 sons, Bernie Glenn Jr (Rhonda) of Wheeling, Brad Glenn of Wheeling, and Brian Glenn of San Diego, CA. Bernie was also a loving grandfather to 4 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren: Craig (Jessica) Glenn, Natalie Walsh, Tracy Glenn, Kristen Glenn, Steven Conaway and Erin (James) West. He was also a loving great grandfather to 8 children: Bailey Nixon, Nigel Walsh, Cody Walsh, Liam Glenn, Natasha Walsh, James West lll, Aiden Glenn and Elaina West.

Bernie “Big Pap”, will be remembered as a fun guy, who loved his family and friends; enjoying, helping and just being with them. He felt blessed and was thankful for the great life God gave him.

Family and friends will be received 2-4pm and 6-8pm, Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger St. Wheeling, with a vigil service at 7:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am at St. Vincent De Paul Parish , 2244 Marshall Ave. , Elm Grove, Wheeling. Father Joseph Wiley, presiding. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, National Rd. Wheeling.
