Catherine Elizabeth "Betty" Fahey

October 9, 1931 - January 1, 2021

FAHEY, Catherine Elizabeth, “Betty”, aka “Aunt Betty”, 89 of Wheeling died Friday January 1, 2021 in Wheeling Hospital from complications of COVID-19. She was born on October 9, 1931 a daughter of the late George M. and Blanche C. Schiffer Fahey.

She was a Graduate of the former St. Joseph Academy, West Liberty State College and the University of Pittsburgh. She was a Social Worker at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Wheeling from 1954-1972, the Director of Social Services at Wheeling Hospital from 1972-1984 and the Director of Social Services at Reynolds Memorial Hospital from 1984 until her retirement. She was a member of Corpus Christi Parish, the Academy of Certified Social Workers, West Virginia Counseling, the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, the National Association of Social Workers and was previously on the Board of Welty Hospice.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George A. Fahey, Dennis J. Fahey and Robert F. Fahey, six sisters, Mary Ann “Molly” McCormick, Blanche T. Fahey, Angela C. Fahey, Rhea Fahey, Angel Fahey and Sr. Claire Joseph Fahey, CSJ.

Surviving is a brother, John E. “Jack” Fahey of Wheeling, sister in law Dorothy Fahey of Bridgeport, OH as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and great grand nieces and great grand nephews.

Due to safety concerns for all in light of COVID-19 there will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be held on Saturday January 9, 2021 at 9:30am at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Extended family and friends are invited to attend this service virtually on Tribucast at https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/31688584. A public memorial mass will be announced and held at a later date at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling.

Memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Parish or Mount St. Joseph. On line condolences may be made to the family at www.altmeyer.com

Condolences to all the members of the Fahey and McCormick family. Betty was a bright light, and kept us close to one another all her life long. She was especially kind to my Grandma, Aunt Clara Killeen and Aunt Jo and my Mom T.D. In fact, she was holding my Grandma’s hand when she died at Wheeling Hospital. Family was so important to her. She’s a major part of the story of Aunt Blanche who had such a big family herself, and is the basis for the true story of a wonderful loving family who reached out to her sisters and her Dad’s sister when Blanche died. I'm so sorry for the loss of Aunt Betty. She will be missed. She always had a smile on her face when I would see her from the time I was little until I moved out of town.
