We mourn the loss and passing of Clarence “Bert” Shelek, Jr. of Wheeling, a recent patient of Wheeling Hospital.
Born in Wheeling on June 12, 1951, he was the only son of Clarence “Bert” Shelek, Sr. and Ercella Hixenbaugh Shelek.
His career with Consol Coal/Consol Energy, where he was a Land Agent, was a highlight in his life. He excelled and thrived in the many years of his career.
Bert was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School, where he enjoyed playing football and softball. He played with the Ohio Valley Panthers; the Wheeling Recreation Softball, fast and slow pitch; the original IDE Softball League, and was an avid golfer with traveling teams; a member of the Cave Club and the Moose Lodge #2621.
An Island legend in his own time, he savored every bit of his riverfront home.
Surviving is a son, Matthew Ryan Shelek of Triadelphia; a special “Aunt Margaret Ann” Schenerlein, 95 years old, who holds a very special place in his heart; four sisters: Jan Armstrong (husband Jack/deceased); Mary Lou Guckert (Tom); Leslie Manning (Larry) and Lynne Shelek all of Wheeling; Nieces and Nephews: Kurt, Derek, Megan, Brad, Jacob and Deanna; several great nieces and great nephews within his family
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday March 6, 2019 from 1 – 8 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling. Mass of Christian will be celebrated on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 9:30 am at Cathedral of St. Joseph with Monsignor Kevin Quirk as celebrant. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
