E. Colleen "Cokie" Carmichael

September 2, 1929 - February 10, 2021

E. Colleen “Cokie” Carmichael, On February 10, 2021, left this earth to join her daughters, Ruth Ann and Susan, in heaven.  She resided most of her adult life in Moundsville, WV until she moved to Glen Dale, WV to reside with her son and daughter-in law.

Colleen was born in Vienna, West Virginia, on September 2, 1929 to the late Opal D. and Paul D. Hefner.  In addition to both parents, she was preceded in death by her daughters, Ruth Ann McCulley and Susan Lynn Carmichael (they died within one month of each other); sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and James Kirschner; sister-in-law, Jean Hefner; niece, Constance Hefner; and sister-in-law, Norma Berisford.

Colleen was a beloved and dedicated Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma, Aunt Cokie, “Other Mother”, and friend.  She was a great cook, baker, candy-maker, and crafter.  She looked forward to cooking many great meals for her family, friends, and Hoagy’s Heroes riders.  Many of her family and friends looked forward to her delicious chocolate fudge, and homemade caramels at Christmas. She and her sister Rosie worked tirelessly on beautiful and unique Christmas presents for family and friends. Colleen also loved her walks around Moundsville and exercising.  She even led a class at Grand Vue park doing the “Janies”.  She also loved laying in the sun and going to the beach with her friends.

Colleen was a Moundsville High School alumna and enjoyed working on all school reunions held every 5 years.  She was also an assistant 4-H leader at Graysville, WV.  Colleen was a volunteer with Hoagy’s Heroes and served as the secretary/treasurer for many years.  She also served as “Chief Cook” when she fed the heroes after many of their charity rides.

Colleen worked many places throughout her life including C & P Telephone Company, Kittle Hauling & Supply, State Road Right-of-Way Division, the Coal Gasification plant at Cresap, West Virginia University Extension Office, Marx Toy Company, and retired in 1996 as Secretary at the Moundsville Police Department.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lee “Hoagy” and Amy Lynn Carmichael with whom she resided in Glen Dale, WV; grandchildren, Hoagy Robert Carmichael and his wife, Bridget, their children Rylee and Mason, Wind Ridge, PA; Charity Mae Carmichael, and her children Azalea and Everett, Wind Ridge, PA; Ruthann’s children, Courtney Alyson McCulley. Glen Dale, WV, Holly Marie McCulley, Gahanna, OH; Sharon Lyon, Mother of Hoagy and Charity; her brother Thomas Hefner of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church in Moundsville, WV. Colleen’s kindness, courage, strength, and wisdom will never be forgotten.  She will be forever remembered and cherished by all who knew and loved her.

In accordance with Colleen’s wishes, there will be no visitation.  A family graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery at a date to be determined.  Donations in her memory may be sent to Hoagy’s Heroes, 315 4th Street, Glen Dale, WV  26038 or online at www.hoagysheroes.org.
