Gerald Gene Gates, 85, formerly of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Friday, May 18, 2018, in Liza’s Place, Wheeling.

Jerry was born July 11, 1932 in Belmont, Ohio, a son of the late Frank and Cecelia (Sustersic) Gates. He was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School; a U.S. Army and Navy veteran; a retiree from the U.S. Can Corp.; and a member of MENSA, the International High IQ Society. He was a devout Catholic, and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Shadyside, Ohio and The Cathedral of St. Joseph, Wheeling.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene (Lively) Gates; a son, Jeffrey Gates; a grandson, Brandon Gates; and a brother, William Gates. He is survived by his daughter, Gale Richards of Wheeling; a step-daughter, Janet (Thomas L., Jr.) McKenzie of Wheeling; a step-son, Danny (Marcy) Elson of Bellaire, Ohio; six grandsons, Christopher, Ryan, Bradley, Shannon, Matthew and Brent; four great-grandchildren, Jadyn, Clayton, Jessica and Aaliyah; and a great-great granddaughter, Brooklyn.

I never knew Jerry that well, but the couple times I did talk to him, I could tell he was a good person. I am a nephew of Marlene (Lively) Gates! Please accept my sympathy for your loss! May Jerry rest in peace!
