Henry G. Schmitt, 93, of Wheeling, died Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.
He was born April 21, 1925 in Wheeling, a son of the late Lawrence and Eulalia Schiffer Schmitt.
Henry retired as Director of the Physical Plant at Wheeling Jesuit University, was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, had retired from the City of Wheeling as a fire fighter was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 12 and was an Army Air Corp veteran of WWII.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia R. Bernhart Schmitt in 2015, 5 brothers; Rev. Eugene Schmitt, Lawrence Schmitt, Raymond Schmitt, Richard Schmitt and Bishop Bernard Schmitt along with a grandson, Jason Schmitt.
Henry is survived by his 5 children; Edward L. (Teresa) Schmitt, of Wheeling, Charles R. (Rebecca Sue) Schmitt, of Wheeling, Janet Marie Schmitt, of Wheeling, James H. (Jennifer) Schmitt of Wheeling, Bernard J. Schmitt of Marietta, OH, and a brother, Robert H. Schmitt, Sr. of Wheeling, along with 14 grandchildren; Edward (Michelle) Schmitt, Jr., James (Sharlyn) Schmitt, Derek (Susan) Schmitt, Bradley (Karen) Schmitt, Matthew (Jenn) Schmitt, Chad (Nicole) Schmitt, Lee (Samantha) Schmitt, Andrew (Jessica) Schmitt, Jessica Schmitt, Christopher Schmitt, Amy (Clayton) Fitzsimmons, Colin Schmitt, Angeline Schmitt and Amanda Schmitt, and 24 great grandchildren; Hudson, Alec, Carly, Nathaniel, Nicholas, Jayli, Leilani, Annabella, Farrah, London, Peyton, Penelope, Emmit, Isaiah, Valentina, Calvin, Carter, Isaac, Mason, Kendall, Tenley, Madelyn, Emily and Leah.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove, WV 26003, where a vigil service will be held at 6:00pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 11:00am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with Msgr. Kevin Quirk and Msgr. George Coyne as con-celebrants.
Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, with full military honors from the Moundsville Honor Guard.
