Henry John Samol, 96, of Moundsville, WV, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Wheeling, WV. He was born August 4, 1925, in Wheeling, a son of the late Kazimir and Katherine (Kenzora) Samol.
Henry was a loving family man who enjoyed fishing, gardening, bird watching, building and sharing birdhouses and watching the Steelers.
Henry had a contagious smile with an easy going, sweet personality. Born to Polish immigrants, he spoke often of his fond memories growing up on Jacob Street in South Wheeling, with his family, and spending summers with his cousins on his grandparent’s farm in Belmont County, OH.
Henry was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Navy as a Sea Bee in the Pacific. He enjoyed working. He loved to fix things and figure out how things worked. He worked at Scott Lumber, McDowells in Martins Ferry and Sistersville Tankworks, to name a few. He retired from Day and Night Home Security, a business he ran with his brother, Emil.
Henry was married to Lena, and was a devoted father of four and proud grandfather. His children will always remember his jokes, words of encouragement and driving tips, not to mention his championship “Uno” skills. He was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Moundsville.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Lena (Shuttleworth) Samol, in 1989; two brothers, Emil and Joseph Samol, and a sister, Helen. He is survived by three daughters, Susan (Ken) Nida of Florida, Carol Samol of New York and Beth Samol of Wheeling; a son, Stephen (Donna) Samol of Virginia; a grandson, Kenneth Nida of Washington; and several nieces, nephews & cousins.
Friends will be received at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Avenue, Moundsville, Thursday, May 19, 2022, from 6 pm until time of vigil service at 7:45 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Friday, May 20, 2022, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Moundsville. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, with full military honors.
