John R. "Jack" Pennybacker, Jr.

John R. “Jack” Pennybacker Jr., 79, of Wheeling, WV, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2020 at the Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.
He was born September 18, 1940 in McMechen, WV, a son of the late John R. Pennybacker, Sr. & Cecelia V. (Brant) Pennybacker.
Jack graduated from Union High School in Benwood before attending Findlay College in Findlay, OH. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corp from 1959-1963. He also ran in the Pan Am Games representing the United State Marines and was a lifetime member of the Benwood American Legion, Post #46.
Jack worked for the B&O, Chessie System and CSX Railroad in Benwood and retired as a brakeman and conductor after 36 years of service. He served as the United Transportation Union (UTU) Legislative Representative for Local 504 for 22 years and as State Director for the UTU in West Virginia, He also was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wheeling and member of the Railroad Maintenance Authority Board.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and gatherings, which were full of laughter. He was committed to his brother, Raymond, Who he loved very much. After raising his children, he and Leona would spend their winters in Sarasota as well as traveling all over the country and Canada. He traveled along the East coast in their mobile home with his frequent stops along the way at the Marine Corps Camp Lejeune. He enjoyed watching and attending football and basketball games over the years and was an avid guest at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for various shows.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marina F. (Robinson) Pennybacker and his grand-daughter, Sarah Ashley Pennybacker.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Leona M. (Yantha) Pennybacker of Wheeling; two daughters, Jill L. (Mark) Eddy of Wheeling and Alicia M. (Rick) Derrow of Valley Groove, WV; four sons, Jeff J. Pennybacker of Benwood, WV, Shawn R. ( Vicki) Pennybacker of Wheeling, Timothy B. (Tiffany) Pennybacker of Follansbee, WV and Jason W. Pennybacker and long-time companion, Rebecca Kessler of Wheeling; four grandchildren, Justin, Jason, Josie and Andrew Pennybacker; sister-in-law, Ella (Roger) Boulanger of Ontario , Canada; two brother-in-laws, Benny (Lisa) Robinson and Bill (Lois) Robinson, all of Ontario Canada and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from noon until 3 and 6 to 8 pm, Sunday January 19 2020 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, with a Vigil service at 7:30pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, January 20, 2020 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling, with the Rev. Carlos L. Melocoton Jr. serving as Celebrant and Msgr. Jeremiah McSweeney as Co-Celebrant.
Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, with full military graveside honors.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to YSS Youth Mentoring Network, PO Box 6041, Wheeling WV 26003.
