PHILLIPS, Julius Michael “Junior”, passed away on Saturday May 25, 2019 at Wheeling Hospital surrounded by his family, he was 84 years old.
He was born on January 9, 1935 at Wheeling Hospital to Julius J. and Angela Witt Phillips.
Junior is predeceased by his parents Julius and Angela, as well as his loving wife of 59 years, Joanne.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Louise Gellner of Pensacola, Florida; his children, David and Rosie Phillips, Kathy Phillips, Linda and Tom O’Hare, Mary Esposito, and beloved Chihuahua, Pepe. Junior is also lovingly remembered by his five grandchildren, Amanda Morgan, Bryan Phillips, Anthony Phillips, Rachel O’Hare, Ryan O’Hare; and several cousins and great-grandchildren.
Junior graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1952 and went on to serve two years in the United States Marine Corps and three years in the United States Navy, earning an Honorable Discharge in 1957.
After his service, he attended McKinley Vocational School and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local #141 for almost 60 years, and served as the head of the Apprenticeship Committee for many years. Junior was well-known for his fishing skills and was a member of the Almost Heaven Bass Masters, the Clendening Lake Fishing Club, and the Northern Valley Fishing Club. The Julius Phillips Open Tournament is a tournament held annually at Clendening Lake.
Junior was well-known and well-liked by many, and will be missed greatly by his family and the friends that he made wherever he went.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 10 am- 12 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, followed by a private service for family.
