Lester Martin Mercer, 89, loving husband, father, pappy and friend, of Moundsville, WV, passed away Monday, May 6, 2019, at, Liza’s Place, Wheeling, WV, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 13, 1929, in Marshall County, son of the late Guy Lester Mercer and Jessie (McCain) Mercer. He was a former employee of Louis Marx Company and Fostoria Glass and retired from Bayer Chemical after 33 years of service. He loved his family, gardening, hunting, and fishing. Lester was a Sargent in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Hawaii. He served in the 7th Air Force 91st Fighter Squadron as an airplane mechanic. He was a member of the American Legion Post #3 Moundsville, member of the NRA, Moundsville Rifle Association, Veterans Administration and a member of the Moundsville First Christian Church. In addition to his parents, Lester was preceded in death by his stepmother, Garnet Mercer; maternal grandparents, Leslie and Sadie McCain; paternal grandparents, Martin and Georgie Mercer; his beautiful granddaughter, Babe Ellen Quigley Pelley and son in law, David Lee Quigley, Sr. Survivors include his loving wife of 69 1/2 years, Helen Justina (Wood) Mercer of Moundsville; four daughters, Leslie Quigley of Glen Dale, WV, Cindy LeBlanc of Fairhaven ,MA, Sherry Cicholski and Darla Howe of Moundsville; four grandchildren, Francis (Kathleen) Cicholski of Fredericksburg, VA, Amber (Dave) Rauh of Natick MA, April (Matt) Soares of Fairhaven MA and David (Kelly) Quigley. of Benwood, WV; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob and Nicholas Cicholski, Colton and Callie Rauh, Gabriel, Emma, and Ellana Soares and Triton Quigley of Benwood; two step-sisters, Carol (Charlie) Caldwell and Sheila (Bill) Powell of Moundsville and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Friends will be received on Friday, May 10, 2019, from 10 am until the time of services at noon at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes & Kirby Vance Chapels, 118 Grant Avenue, Moundsville, with Rev. Wesley Howsare officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, with graveside military rites by the Moundsville Honor Guard.
