Martha Jean (McCardle) Koonce, of Fork Ridge, Moundsville, WV, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Acuity Care, Wheeling, WV.

She was born in Marshall County, WV, a daughter of the late Arnold “Doc” E. and Iva (Gardner) McCardle.

She was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Fork Ridge, retired Mechanic for AEP Kammer Plant, Lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Ladies Auxillary Chapter #709, member of the Ladies Auxillary VFW Post #437, Moundsville, member of the Ladies Auxillary American Legion Post #3, Moundsville and member of the Elm Grove Eagles #1891.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Paul Hillberry, Jr.; brothers, Harold (Bessie) and Donnie McCardle and brother-in-law, Walter Ritchea.

Surviving are her husband, James L. Koonce of Moundsville; son, Garry (Denise) Hillberry of Sand Hill, WV; daughter, Pauline (Darrell) Thomas of Avella, PA; step-sons, Jeff (Betty) , Mark and Eric (Laura) Koonce all of Cincinnati, OH; sister, Ruth Ritchea of Sand Hill; Grandchildren, Amy (Chuck) ,Rena (Rusty) Clem, Sean Thomas, Brandon, Logan, Nathan Hillberry, Josh Hillberry and Rachel Koonce; Eight  great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8pm with a VFW Ladies Auxillary memorial service at 6:15 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Ave., Moundsville, where funeral services will be held at 11am Sunday, February 7, 2016 with Rev. Thomas Steele officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Moundsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church or the Marshall County Animal Shelter c/o TMCFunding.com.

Martha will be sadly missed by our whole family she and Jim have always been so wonderful to us all. Jim you are in our prayers

Martha was such a sweet lady. I have always enjoyed talking with her and Jim at my parents 4th of July parties. She was a one of a kind person who will never be forgotten.
