BARNES, Mary Ann, 85, of McMechen, WV, died Thursday, August 20, 2020, in Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

She was born July 14, 1935, in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Andrew and Julia Filip Kunik. She was a retired teacher’s aide for St. James and John Catholic School in McMechen and St. Mary’s Preschool in Martins Ferry, Ohio. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in McMechen, the Women’s Life Society, the Sisters of St. Joseph from 1953-1968, and was a cantor at St. James Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold R. Barnes, and her stepson, Robert Barnes.

She is survived by one stepson, Paul G. Barnes of Toronto, Ohio; two sisters, Veronica DiCola of Moundsville, WV, and Julia Geer of Mount Olivet, WV; two brothers, Andrew A. Kunik Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C., and John M. Kunik of Hartwell, GA.; 5 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to her as “Antz”.

Friends will be received on Sunday, August 23, 2020, from 2-8 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall Street, McMechen, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 24, 2020, at 10 am at St. James Catholic Church in McMechen with Rev. Arul Anthony as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Congregation of St. Joseph, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, West Virginia 26003
