Mary Stein

September 19, 1956 - July 27, 2015

STEIN, Mary Kathryn (Kanick), 58, of Wheeling, W.Va. and McMechen,
W.Va., passed away peacefully Monday, July 27, 2015 at Liza’s Place in
Wheeling surrounded by her family.
She was born September 19, 1956, in Wheeling, a daughter of Anne
Kanick of McMechen, and the late John Kanick. She was a member of Our
Lady of Peace Parish. She was a devoted, valuable employee of
Crittenton Services where she served on the management team for the
past nine years as the Vice President of quality improvement. She was
dedicated to providing the very best services to children and families
of West Virginia and with her guidance Crittenton has been able to
bring much needed change to thousands of people. Because of her
commitment to helping others, she was asked to be a national peer
reviewer for the Council on Accreditation and traveled nationwide
helping other agencies achieve better quality care.  She was also an
adjunct professor at Wheeling Jesuit University and West Liberty
University.  She previously worked at Wheeling Hospital in the
community outreach department, establishing programs that are still
active today including Safety Town, Safe Sitter, and the Annual Cancer
Survivor’s picnic.  She volunteered her time to numerous charitable
organizations throughout Wheeling. Mary’s final charitable act was the
donation of her body to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
for the advancement of cancer research.
She is survived by her three beloved children, Marissa Anne Perrin and
her husband Christopher A. Perrin, of Robinson, Pa., Casey Marie
Mason, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Ryan Michael Mason of Wexford, Pa.
She is also survived by her aunts, Olga Skvarka  and Jane Tillman of
Wheeling and Sonya Metz of Wellsburg, W.Va.; her sister, Cynthia Burke
of Bethlehem, W.Va., her husband Tom Burke, and their children
Matthew, John, Kathleen and Thomas Burke; and her sister Karen Wojcik
of Bethlehem, her husband David Wojcik and her nephew, Dylan Wojcik.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from
2-4 p.m and 6-8 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel,
154 Kruger Street, Wheeling.  A memorial mass will be celebrated on
Thursday, July 30, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic
Church in Bethlehem, W.Va., with Rev. Dennis R. Schuelkens, Jr. as
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Valley Hospice
(Liza’s Place), 308 Mt. St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, W.Va. 26003 or Our
Lady of Peace Parish at 640 Fairmont Dr., Wheeling, W.Va.
