Nelson James McCann, 82, of Wheeling, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 10th, 2019. He was born on September 6th, 1936 in Wheeling, the son of the late Howard James and Regina Helen (Owoc) McCann.
Nelson was a graduate of Blessed Trinity Grade School and Tridelphia High School. He received his Machinist Trade Certification from Blaw-Knox Corp. in Wheeling, West Virginia, his bachelor’s degree from West Liberty State College, and his graduate degree from Kent State University. He taught Machining at Martins Ferry High School and later taught Auto Mechanics at Belmont Technical College in St. Clairsville, Ohio. He was a member of the Packards International Motor Car Club and the Auto Restoration Club.
In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Shirley (Hart) McCann; an older brother, Milton McCann; and a younger brother, Howard McCann.
He is survived by a sister, Kathleen Sokol of Wheeling; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Nelson was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Elm Grove. He loved working with machines and restoring classic cars. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, sharp wit, and conversational personality. He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Friends will be received from 2-5 pm on Sunday, May 12th at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, May 13th, 2019 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Elm Grove, with the Rev. Msgr. Paul Hudock as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
Nelson’s family would like to thank his primary care physician and care givers for their generosity, kindness, vigilance, and compassion. Their extraordinary commitment to Nelson’s well-being ensured he had peace and comfort in his last days.
