Robert Eugene “Herk” Henry, Sr., 81, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Monday, August 8, 2016, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Herk was born August 14, 1934, in Wheeling, a son of the late James C. Henry, Sr. and Mildred (LaRue) Henry. He was a U.S. Army veteran, proudly serving his country from February of 1957 to January of 1959; a former Wheeling policeman, retiring after 25 years of service; a member of the F.O.P. Lodge No. 38, Wheeling; and served as a councilman for the City of Wheeling for 22 years.
Herk was a active member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Wheeling, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and served on the finance committee.; a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Carroll Council, No. 504, Wheeling; and a part-employee of Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Wheeling Flower Shop. He was also proud booster, volunteer and “Chain Gang” member of Wheeling Central Catholic High School; and a member of the Belmont County Eagles Bowling Association, the Fraternal Order of Elks No. 28, Wheeling, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2541, St. Clairsville, Ohio, and the Cave Club, I.O.L.A. Club and former Kain Club, Wheeling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Anthony Weishar; mother-in-law, Alma Erbacher-Welty; son-in-law, Rob Nettles, Jr.; brother, James C. Henry, Jr.; two sisters, Patricia Mullins and Kate Gongola; three nephews, Raymond and B.J. Oberle, and Richard Henry; and a niece, Theresa Ward.
Herk is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Rosemarie (Erbacher) Henry; six children, Cassie (Gene) Merkle, Bob (Rene) Henry, Pat (Laurie) Henry, Lisa (John) Weishar, Jake (Bonnie) Henry and Jenny Nettles; 14 grandchildren, Allyson Merkle, Robbie (Pam) Henry, Joey (Ashley) Henry, Andrew (Sara) Henry, Catie (Frankie) DiCarlantonio, P.J. (Megan) Henry, Paul Henry, Parker Henry, Mandy Weishar, Jack (Brie) Weishar, Jake (Bethany) Henry, Christopher Henry, Sarah Henry and Anne Nettles; two great-grandchildren, Cam DiCarlantonio and Bailey Henry; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; and his loving dog, Angel.
Friends will be received from 5-8 pm, Wednesday, and 12-3 & 6-8 pm, Thursday, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 7:45 pm, Thursday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Friday, August 12, 2016, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Douglas Ondeck as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum, Wheeling, with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veteran’s Honor Guard.
