BURKLE, Sr. Berenice, CSJ, 94, of Wheeling, W.Va., died Thursday, March 28, 2019.
She was born February 20, 1925, a daughter of the late Bernard W. Burkle and Berenice Watt Burkle of Corpus Christi Parish in Warwood, Wheeling.
Sister Berenice attended Corpus Christi School and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in June 1942.
Sister Berenice entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in September 1942.
For a short time, she ministered at St. Vincent’s Home in Elm Grove and taught at Blessed Martin’s School in Wheeling, and at St. John’s School in Benwood, W.Va.
Following studies at the Catholic University in Washington and West Liberty State College, Sister Berenice served in the profession of medical technology at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Charleston, W.Va., St. Mary’s Hospital in Clarksburg, W.Va., Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, W.Va., Ohio Valley General Hospital in Wheeling, and United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
During Sister Berenice’s residency in Clarksburg, she served as a medical technologist and as a cytologist at United Hospital Center for twenty years.
Following her retirement, she volunteered in the admissions office and the hospice department of the hospital. Sister Berenice is known throughout Clarksburg, Salem, and Fairmont for her volunteer work to individuals and families in nursing homes.
She was a member of the board of directors at United Hospital Center and the Susan Dew Hoff Memorial Clinic in West Milford, W.Va.
Family and friends will be received from 1-9 pm on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Mount St. Joseph Chapel, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, where vigil services will be held at 7 pm.
Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, April 1, 2019 in the Mount St. Joseph Chapel with Rev. Bill Anderson as presider. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
