I am very shocked to hear about Mel's passing. I coached at Avella High School, and Mel was my umpire for a lot of my softball games. It was a honor to get to know Mel. What a special person, who always listened and shared a lot of information with me. I will miss him dearly. He always had a smile on his face and was very pleasant. He always took time out to talk after the games and all the kids loved him! He will always be their favorite. You have all the thoughts and prayers from all of us. May god be with you during this difficult time. RIP Mel <3

Prayers to the family. We have fond memories of Mel from Burgettstown; umpiring men's fast pitch softball and from refereeing youth basketball games. So nice to the kids and parents and keeping the grown ups in line to preserve a family envirowent up at Langeloth. Rest easy Mel!

I always enjoyed our convos on the field throughout the years. He made a huge impact on the game and how he interacted with the youth. Always positive and made it fun. He will be missed. Heaven gained a wonderful person and amazing umpire. The angels must have had a questionable call during their game and needed him to help out. Fly high my friend, until we meet again.

Mel was always so personable, had a great sense of humor, and the best laugh! Stu and I are going to miss our buddy. My sincere condolences go out to his family and many friends. RIP Melvin.

My condolences to the Copney family. I had the pleasure of working with Mel in high school athletics. He did a great job officiating basketball, football and softball at Fort Cherry. He was very personable and always greeted me with a smile and asked how I was doing. He was a fair official and the student athletes enjoyed having him call thier games. Thank you Mel for your many years of service to the youth of PA and West Virginia. You will be missed. Thoughts and prayers for Mel and his family.
